A WEEKEND ESCAPE TO NANYUKI: MAISHA SWEETWATERS CAMP

They say the best trips are the ones where you pack light, but I took that quite literally—I packed my  husband and took him to Nanyuki. No, I didn’t stuff him in a suitcase (tempting as that may be at times); I simply planned the whole getaway, ensuring that all he had to do was show up and enjoy. And oh, did we enjoy!

Tony & I

We arrived Maisha Sweetwaters Camp just in time for lunch, and what a feast it was! A buffet spread so generous it would have made a wedding reception jealous. There were all kinds of meats sizzling with flavor, fresh salads bursting with colour, indulgent desserts whispering sweet nothings to our taste buds, and even a stone oven pizza station. At this point, I briefly considered abandoning my city life to become a professional buffet taster, but reality (and a full stomach) caught up with me.

Post-feast, we retreated to our cozy room, where the beds were so comfortable that they practically begged us to take a nap. But adventure called, so we laced up our shoes and took a scenic walk around the camp. The views of Mount Kenya were nothing short of majestic, standing there like an ancient guardian watching over our escapades.

After a well-earned nap (because we believe in balancing exploration with proper rest), we eased into the evening with a bonfire. There’s something about a campfire that makes you spill your deepest thoughts—or, in my case, recall embarrassing childhood stories, much to my husband’s amusement. We wrapped ourselves in the warmth of the flames, swapping tales over a delicious dinner before retiring to our patio, where a firepot awaited. We sat there, books in hand, letting the crackling fire and crisp night air lull us into the kind of peace city life rarely offers.

The next morning, we set out for Ol Pejeta for a game drive, eager to meet the residents. The chimpanzees were a highlight, with their mischievous glances as we heard captivating stories of rescue and resilience. If chimps had podcasts, I’d subscribe in a heartbeat. But the real star of the show was Baraka, the blind rhino. We had the privilege of feeding him, and let me tell you, there is something profoundly humbling about hand-feeding a creature that size. If Baraka could talk, I imagine he’d say,  “Ah, yes, my new friends, keep the food coming.” I’d also subscribe to his podcast, LOL!

As we drove back to camp, full of wonder and a renewed appreciation for nature, I realized that this trip had been the perfect blend of relaxation and adventure. And while I had packed my husband for the trip, we both left Nanyuki with something extra—a heart full of memories and the undeniable urge to return.

Until next time, Nanyuki. Keep the buffets warm for us!
